Tesla has launched Powerwall 3P in Australia today, a fully integrated solar inverter and battery built for homes with a three-phase supply. Pre-orders are open now.
If you have three-phase power, this is the one we have been waiting for. Until now Powerwall 3 could only provide single phase backup. If you wanted three phase backup, that required a Gateway per phase.
The key numbers
- Storage: 13.5 kWh usable per unit
- Power: up to 15 kW continuous, configurable down to 11.5, 10 or 5 kW to suit network limits
- Solar input: up to 20.4 kWp of panels, 60 to 1000 V DC input range
- MPPTs: 4, each with a 60 to 800 V DC operating range, 16 A Imp and 21 A Isc. MPPTs 1 and 2 (or 3 and 4) can be paralleled for 32 A Imp and 42 A Isc, which gives real flexibility for parallel strings and high-current panels
- Peak output (1 second): 21 kW for three-phase loads, 7.4 kW for single-phase loads
- Size and weight: 1105 x 609 x 193 mm, 138 kg, floor or wall mount, indoor or outdoor (IP67)
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz), Ethernet and 4G
- Warranty: 10 years
With solar coming in, Powerwall 3P can deliver the full 15 kW on a day of 25°C or cooler. With no solar, such as at night, output from the battery is up to 11.5 kW across the three phases. Output is capped at 5 kW per phase.

Scaling up
You can add Powerwall 3 Expansion units, each another 13.5 kWh, to the lead Powerwall 3P. Up to three can stack behind it on a floor mount or hang on the wall beside it. For more power as well as more storage, up to four Powerwall 3P units can run together.
The maximum system is four Powerwall 3P units plus three Expansion units: 60 kW and 94.5 kWh.

Built for Australian conditions
All-weather durability. Powerwall 3P is built with a die-cast aluminium enclosure and a tempered, UV-stable glass front panel, so it keeps its structural integrity and good looks after years outdoors. The fully sealed IP67 enclosure handles rain, high humidity and up to 60 cm of flood water, and it operates from -20°C to 50°C.
Active cooling and Heat Mode. Active cooling keeps Powerwall 3P from overheating through an Australian summer, and Heat Mode distributes warmth to keep it performing in cold conditions.

Made in the USA. Powerwall 3P is manufactured at Tesla's Gigafactory Nevada, one of the most advanced battery production sites in the world.
Highly efficient. Solar to home or grid runs at 98.4% efficiency. Solar stored in the battery and used later comes back at 90%.
Quiet. Typical operating noise is under 50 dB(A) at 1 metre, so it sits comfortably beside a living area or bedroom wall.
Safety built in. An integrated DC isolator, Type II surge protection on both AC and DC, rapid shutdown, residual current protection and isolation monitoring all come inside the unit. It is tested to UL 9540A and IEC 62619 battery safety standards.
Always connected. Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz), dual-port Ethernet and 4G are built in, so monitoring in the Tesla app and over-the-air updates keep flowing.
Compact footprint. Expansion units can stack directly behind Powerwall 3P on a floor mount, adding storage without taking extra wall space.
Backed by a 10-year warranty. Powerwall 3P comes with a 10-year warranty covering both hardware and labour. Tesla's Australian warranty, which now names Powerwall 3P, also guarantees 70% of capacity after 10 years, with unlimited cycles for solar self-consumption, time-based control and backup. Keeping the system connected to the internet for firmware updates is a condition of the full term.
Smarter with Tesla Home. Tesla Home comes standard with Powerwall 3P. Powered by Opticaster, Tesla's AI optimisation software, it learns how you use energy and responds to changing electricity rates, running your air conditioner and charging your EV at the best times.
Designing your system
Charge rate. A single Powerwall 3P charges at up to 5 kW, or 8 kW with Expansion units (although we are typically seeing up 10kW for most customers with Powerwall 3 systems we would expect most of the time 10kW charge rate with the additional Expansion unit). So if you're charging one Powerwall 3P 13.5 kWh unit from the grid, this will take close to three hours, which matters if you want to soak up a short free or cheap power window.
A complete Tesla system. Powerwall 3P is designed to work with Tesla's own Backup Gateway 2 and Remote Meter as one integrated system. Currently the Powerwall 3P isn't compatible with Powerwall 2, single-phase Powerwall 3 or other brands. If you already have a Powerwall 2, we will work out the best path forward with you.
Works with your existing solar. New panels connect straight into Powerwall 3P's four MPPTs. Existing solar systems, including those with panel optimisers, can stay connected as AC-coupled solar through their own inverter.
String design. Each MPPT takes up to 16 A operating current. Where a string runs higher, for example with larger high-current panels, we parallel MPPTs 1 and 2 (or 3 and 4) with Y-splitters to give 32 A on that pair with Tesla allowing those two pairings.
Backup tailored to your home. With Backup Gateway 2, Powerwall 3P detects an outage, switches your home to stored energy automatically and reconnects safely when the grid returns. It supports whole-home backup and can run three-phase appliances like air conditioners and pool pumps. We design which circuits stay on around your home and Tesla's install requirements.
What are the next steps
Thinking about a battery: if your home is three-phase, Powerwall 3P is now our first recommendation to look at. One unit replaces a separate solar inverter, covers most homes, and grows with Expansion units as your needs change.
Pre-orders open now: Powerwall 3P is in Australia and you can pre-order it with us today. We'll confirm installation timing with you directly.
