QUICK REVIEW
The Tesla Powerwall 3 Expansion Pack is designed for homeowners who already own a Powerwall 3 and want to scale up their energy storage without the cost of adding another full unit.
More Storage Capacity: Each expansion unit adds 13.5 kWh of storage, providing more backup power during outages or for off-grid living.
Simple Integration: Expansion packs connect directly to an existing Powerwall 3 with no extra inverter required, making installation easier and more affordable.
Flexible Scaling: You can add up to three expansion units per Powerwall 3, tailoring the system to meet your household’s needs.
Installation Options: Choose between wall mount or stacking kits, including ground-mount configurations, depending on available space.
Compliance & Safety: Units are fully compliant with product safety standards, though homeowners should check local building codes before stacking.
Tesla Powerwall 3 enables 24/7 solar energy use, storing excess generation for use during peak electricity times or when the grid is down. With its integrated solar inverter and configurable operating modes, Powerwall 3 is engineered for efficient, future-ready expansion to extend backup coverage and reduce energy costs.

Why Add a Powerwall 3 Expansion?
Powerwall 3 Expansion Packs are ideal for existing Powerwall 3 owners who want to extend their backup duration or increase usable storage, at a lower cost than adding a full second unit. Each expansion adds 13.5 kWh of additional storage capacity and integrates seamlessly with the main unit. You can install expansion packs at the time of your initial setup or add them later as your energy needs grow.
✅ Reduced installation time
✅ Extended outage protection
✅ Increased electricity bill savings
✅ Wall mounting kit or stacking kit available depending on system configuration
How It Works
Each Powerwall 3 can support up to three expansion units, increasing total system capacity from 13.5 kWh up to 54 kWh. The expansion packs are DC-coupled and controlled directly by the main unit’s built-in inverter. Essentially, these are simplified Powerwall 3 units without inverter electronics, designed specifically to expand storage at a lower cost and with minimal installation complexity.
Tesla plans to support multi-unit systems, with up to four Powerwall 3s, each connected to three expansion packs, reaching a potential capacity of 216 kWh. This functionality is expected later in 2025, making Powerwall 3 a truly scalable home or light-commercial energy storage solution.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
What size solar PV do I need for my off-grid?
You want as large a rooftop solar PV system as you can fit on your roof to reduce the amount of time you need to rely on your backup generator that may be required for periods during winter periods or times of low solar radiation (i.e. multiple cloudy days).
We generally recommend a minimum 10kW solar PV system, but the final size will depend on your anticipated load/demand. We can help you work this out by using our load profile sheet as part of our comprehensive quoting process.
